The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week approved the first new antibiotic for treatment of severe diarrhea after it became the first antibiotic to treat the bacterial infection that caused the common cold and flu in children. The antibiotics are now sold under the brand name Zithromax, which is not available over the counter. The drug's effectiveness, however, was limited to one dose per week, and the side effects were not reported. A new version of the antibiotic, Zithromax 250mg (Zmax), was developed by AstraZeneca.
The Zithromax 250mg is the first oral antibiotic to treat bacterial infections in children. It is designed to be administered as an intravenous injection, and it is available in various strengths, including 2 grams twice a day, 1.25 grams every other day, 2 grams every other day, and 10 grams every other day. In the new version, AstraZeneca says it's working with U. pharmacies to ensure that all patients should have Zithromax in their possession.
